Much like feeling the purr of a cat, our own humming or singing can be cathartic, stimulate our vagus nerve, and help us feel calmer.
Methods
Om. With deep belly breathes, hum the popular Buddhist chant “Aummmm…”
Voo. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, the “voo” sound is another chant you can voice in order to send frequencies through your body.
Gargling. Much like humming or singing, gargling is the act of using our vocal chords and breath to bubble a liquid in your larynx. Studies have shown that gargling glucose-based liquids (lemonade or other sugary drinks) can help increase self-control and focus. Click here to read a CBS News article.
Singing. There’s nothing that will use our vocal chords more than some loud singing. Singing helps us focus on a song in our minds, while also helping us release emotion. We can also sing ourselves a sweet lullaby.
