Search for Program-Certified Therapists
There are many attachment-based therapies. Some special programs have been developed to train therapists in some of these therapies. Although therapists do not need to be certified in any of these therapies to use them, you might find some of these special therapies attractive, and want to find someone who has received formal training.
EMT (Emotionally-Focused Therapy)
Developed by Sue Johnson (author of “Hold Me Tight”), EMT is the first therapy developed to treat attachment. It was originally developed for couples, but can also be applied to individuals.

Trouble Affording Therapy?
If you are in the US, please be aware that:
- Your insurance will often, but not always, cover therapy.
- If you don’t have insurance, you can check with your employer to see if they offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Some of these programs offer 3-10 free sessions with a therapist of your choice (as long as they’re in-network with the EAP). These benefits often apply to everyone in the household, not just the employee.
- If you do not have insurance, many therapists offer sliding scales based on income.
- Online-based therapy (such as BetterHelp and TalkSpace) are also income-based and could offer more affordable fees.
- Open Path Collective is a nonprofit organization that offers affordable therapy sessions: https://openpathcollective.org/
